Last Saturday my husband (Steve the Auctioneer) worked an auction in a small town in Kansas-Effingham. Where's Effingham? Out in the middle of Effing nowhere. They were selling the lifetime collection of an older dealer from the area. I really felt like she was not being served very well by the booking auction company (Steve was just hired help) since it was going to be held 30 minutes outside of Atchison and not the 30 more civilized minutes. We got there pretty early and we were already too late to get a parking space by the building, so we had to go around back and walk in the cold all the way around. So, I was wrong! There were lots of familiar faces but also a lot of people who were strange to me and I go to a lot of auctions!
It was great to see people my age and bit younger still putting money into merchandise and more personal collectibles. However the really great thing was the young people. There were 3 or more people in their 20s buying a lot of the 50s and 60s items that were new and different to them. As a seller of antiques, it is encouraging to see young people interested, whether they are buying to use or just collect.
I was there for the art pottery, pictures and whatever I could buy to resell. We came home with a truckload, so I guess I got the right stuff . A lot of it is already on display in my messy office. Steve priced a bunch of it and is out at the antique malls right now putting it out. We don't usually get right to the stuff we buy, but with the holiday looming, we had to get it done.
